Five Minute Friday — Easy

It’s so easy to look out the window at the red-headed House Finches fight for a place to eat at our feeder when I’m meant to be studying for my next project.

It’s so easy to watch the wind blow through our naked oak tree, hopeful for the buds to break out in green, when I’m supposed to be writing about ways to live in the world.

It’s so easy to take pictures of the purple flowers blooming on our porch rather than tackling the growing stack of dishes in my sink.

It’s so easy to meet a friend for a two-hour walk in the sunny park up the road instead of shopping for the groceries that seem to fly out of my pantry.

Spring makes it easy not to get anything done.

  1. I’ve been balancing the call of the outdoors with indoor responsibilities too, Shelley. I’ll work indoors for a couple of hours, then pop out for 30 minutes and piddle in the garden. Back in doors and repeat. It’s good to be balanced and guilt free! The two-hour walk in a sunny park sounds amazing!

  2. Such an enjoyable response to the prompt! Your blooming flowers are so pretty – hooray for spring!!

  3. “The grass withers and the flower dies, but the word of our Lord endures forever.” (Isaiah 40:8) So the chaplain always said when he had climbed up to the pulpit and opened his Bible. I was a little girl then, sitting in base chapel between my mother and father. I thought it was sad that flowers died. I knew that my parents had survived World War 2, and when the klaxon went off, daddies ran to their cars and headed for the flight line. When the B-52s took off, the vibrations rattled the China in my mother’s hutch. It was the Cold War and it was all just practice. But it was realistic enough for me to figure out that life on this earth didn’t last forever, for flowers or people. So enjoy the flowers on your porch. The dishes can wait.

  4. It’s easy just let it go,
    recline upon my bed,
for deep in my heart I know
    that cancer wants me dead.
    It’s easy to watch DVDs,
    in a codeine haze,
and in retreat stoop to please
    my coming end of days,
but something ’bout this feels so wrong,
    the wrong kind of surrender,
and I hear a voice, “Be strong!
    And to My glory render
all that you still have to give,
that you may help another live!”

And that’s why I keep on with the sonnets.

  5. So true, although I find it easier to get lost in a book than in nature, LOL! That’s what distracts me from my chores. Although I love to see the sun shining as well.
